What to Buy
The best food buys in Greece are olive oil and honey, though the latter is not especially cheap. It is especially good, however.
Spirits are often sold at very low prices in the country. Ceramics and leather are also good buys, as are handicrafts such
as lace and flokati - the hand-woven woollen rugs. There is also a big trade in museum copies and in modern icons. Distinctive
Greek items include worry beads (kombolói) and the long-handed copper pots used for making Greek coffee. Visit the Central
Market for a great selection of herbs, spices, nuts, olives, cheeses and similar delicacies. It's a good place to visit to
stock up with everything for a cheap picnic lunch. You could do the same at the Prisunic Marinopoulos supermarket chain, which
offers a good range of produce. The stores are distinguished by the large orange 'M' sign. Greece has a long tradition
of the village shop that sells everything, so if you're directed to the 'supermarket' do not necessarily expect to find the
huge American-style shopping experience. An experience it may be, as the shopkeeper delves into the dusty stock to search
for what you want - and often succeeding - but not on the American scale of things. Supermarkets here are also mini-markets,
especially in the tourist areas, again selling everything you might possibly need - and probably a great deal you won't.
