SCENIC BYWAY

Frontier Pathways Scenic Route 165

32.9 miles: 0 hours, 42 minutes

Frontier Pathways Scenic Route 165 (aka Greenhorn Highway) runs south from McKenzie Junction, through the Wet Mountains and the San Isabel National Forest, ending in Colorado City. Meandering through lush alpine meadows and verdant forests of aspen, fir and spruce, this byway shows off some of the loveliest mountain scenery central Colorado has to offer.

Historic homesteads along Frontier Pathways Scenic Route 165 evoke the isolation experienced by early pioneers. One landmark you can’t miss is Bishop Castle, an eye-catching roadside oddity started in 1969 that’s part rock sculpture, part quirky mountain retreat. Farther south, the route swings by Lake Isabel, whose clear waters reflect the surrounding hills.
