SCENIC BYWAY

Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway

0 miles: 0 hours, 0 minutes

Seasonal route: The road is subject to closure in winter. Crossing the rugged Sierras on the Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway (SR 4) is a far more leisurely transit than its more efficient neighbhors I-80 and US 50. Narrow, winding steep grades and sharp curves require careful driving, but that also allows more time to marvel at towering volcanic peaks, plunging river canyons, majestic forests and expansive valley views.

Beyond Angels Camp, SR 4 begins climbing into the Sierra Nevada mountains. Calaveras Big Trees State Park boasts groves of huge redwoods. The panoramic vistas from the vantage point of 8,732-foot Ebbetts Pass, 18 miles southwest of Markleeville, are incredible.
