Residenz Gallery (Residenzgalerie)

Residenzplatz 1, Salzburg, Salzburg

Located in the east wing of Salzburg's Old Residence (Alte Residenz), where Austria’s prince-archbishops once lived, the Residence Gallery (Residenzgalerie) is now home to the state of Salzburg’s painting collection. Step inside to see an impressive array of European art dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries, including paintings by the likes of Rubens and Rembrandt.

Spread across 11 different halls, the Salzburg Resident Gallery displays artwork created by European artists from Austria, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. The gallery’s highlight is the Czernin Collection, which features paintings Count Johann Rudolf Czernin of Vienna collected in the early 19th century. You can visit on your own or as part of a private, customizable Salzburg tour, or join a DomQuartier tour that also visits the Cathedral Museum and St. Peter's Abbey.

  • Admission to the Residence Gallery is with a DomQuartier ticket, which also grants you access to other attractions under the DomQuartier umbrella, including the Cathedral Museum.

  • Discounted admission is available for people ages 60 and over and students. Children 6 and under visit free.

  • The Residence Gallery is on the third floor but is accessible via elevator.

  • There’s a gift shop and a café where you can pick up souvenirs and snacks.

The Residence Gallery is located in Salzburg's Old Town (Altstadt), right by the Salzburg Cathedral and a few minutes walk from Mozartplatz. It's best reached on foot or by public transportation. If you're coming from Salzburg's central railway station, you can take Lines 3, 5, or 6 of the S-Bahn to Rathaus, less than a 5-minute walk away.

For most of the year, the Residence Gallery is closed on Tuesdays, but it's open daily in July, August, December, and the first week of January. The museum is shut on Dec. 24. Check the website for details and timings of guided tours and workshops. Keep in mind that the last entry is always an hour before closing.

Your DomQuartier ticket will also get you into the Cathedral Museum, located on the upper levels of the Salzburg Cathedral. If you're a fan of religious art, you won't want to miss it. The 4-room museum is full of objects ranging from icons to reliquary crosses. The last room in the museum also features an impressively frescoed ceiling.
