McKittrick Canyon
US 62 & McKittrick Rd., Salt Flat, TX, 79847
McKittrick Canyon is at the end of an access road off US 62/180 in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The canyon is a mixture of desert, canyon woodland and highland forest. Prickly pear and agave grow at the entrance; farther along maples, ferns and wildflowers flourish. At the far end, the pine and Douglas fir of the mountain highlands appear. In late October the fall leaves resemble northern woods. Hiking is restricted to designated trails; maps are available at the visitor centers.
