Lost City Museum
721 S. Moapa Valley Blvd., Overton, NV, 89040
Lost City Museum, 721 S. Moapa Valley Blvd., sits on a low mesa overlooking the Moapa Valley. The low-slung adobe building preserves and interprets Moapa Valley prehistory, focusing on the so-called “Lost City,” a number of Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) pueblos that date from about A.D. 200 to about A.D. 1200. Two exhibit halls contain displays of Puebloan pottery and basketry, arrowheads, farming tools and trade items. Photos, drawings, maps and information panels fill out a Lost City timeline, and an exhibit of the foundation of an authentic Pueblo excavation site allows you to imagine what it might be like to be Indiana Jones (minus Nazis in hot pursuit). Outside behind the museum are several daub-and-wattle pueblo replicas, built on the foundations of the originals. The mesa top is crisscrossed with gravel walking paths and dotted with antique Mormon farming equipment. Visitors also can view a 15-minute film about the 1930s excavation of the Lost City. Combined with a day trip to nearby Valley of Fire State Park, the museum is worth a quick stop. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
