Fantastic Caverns

Fantastic Caverns is 1.5 mi. n. of jct. I-44 and SR 13, then 3 mi. w. on W. Farm Rd. 94. Visitors experience the cave on a 1-mile, Jeep-drawn tram tour, where geological formations like columns, flowstones, stalactites and stalagmites can be seen. Guides offer background information about how the cave, one of Missouri's largest, was formed. At one of the stops along the route, a video of a hydrogeologist explaining the connections between cave life, groundwater and people is shown. The temperature in this natural limestone cave is a constant 60 F. Fantastic Caverns has a varied history, beginning with its exploration by 12 women in 1867. The cave was equipped with a dance floor, gambling tables and a bar in the 1920s to function as a speakeasy. It served as a meeting place in the 1930s and was the site of a country music theater in the 1960s and early '70s. Last tour departs one hour before closing. Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
