Arcul de Triumf (Arch of Triumph)

Piața Arcul de Triumf, Bucharest

Like its Parisian namesake, this triumphal arch sits at one of the city’s busiest intersections and is surrounded by a constant whirl of traffic. The 85-foot (27-meter monument, designed by influential Romanian architect Petre Antonescu, was inaugurated in 1936 to celebrate the unification of Romania and victory in World War I.

A symbol of Bucharest, the Arcul de Triumf is often seen on sightseeing tours of Romania’s capital. Most sightseeing tours pass by the monument while following itineraries that include other important attractions, such as Revolution Square, the Palace of Parliament, and Lipscani. Hop-on hop-off bus tours of Bucharest typically stop near the arch. While the arch does contain an interior staircase and viewing platform, these are rarely open to the public.

  • For most of the year, the Arcul de Triumf can only be viewed from the outside.
  • Like its namesake in Paris, Bucharest’s triumphal arch sits amid a heavily-trafficked intersection; take care when crossing.
  • Bring a camera to take pictures of the iconic landmark.

The Arcul de Triumf is situated at the entrance to King Michael I Park (formerly Herăstrău Park) in northern Bucharest at the intersection of Kiseleff Road with Mareșal Constantin Prezan, Mareșal Alexandru Averescu, and Alexandru Constantinescu boulevards. To get there, ride the metro to Aviatorilor Square (Piața Aviatorilor).

Nighttime is the best time to photograph the arch, as it is illuminated after dark. Every year on Romania’s National Day (December 1), military parades are held at the arch.

Just steps from the arch is the green expanse of King Michael I Park. Set around Herăstrău Lake, this vast park offers places to walk, picnic, and go boating. Set within the park grounds is Elisabeta Palace, home of the Romanian royals, and the Village Museum (Muzeul National al Satului "Dimitrie Gusti”), an open-air attraction featuring hundreds of examples of rural Romanian architecture, including houses, barns, churches, and windmills. The park also contains several restaurants and a huge German-style beer hall and garden.
