Bodega Head

Bodega Head is within Sonoma Coast State Park; from SR 1 take Eastshore Rd. to Westshore Rd., then Westshore Rd. to the parking area. This is the rocky headland that forms the entrance into Bodega Harbor. The harbor side has a popular crabbing area along the jetty. Rocky cliffs overlook Campbell Cove, and steps lead down to a small sand beach where waves crash against the rocks. All of Bodega Head is a state marine reserve and protected conservation area. Be sure to hike the Bodega Head Trail, a loop trail that encircles the headland. The views of Bodega Harbor, and particularly of the ocean and sheer cliff walls descending vertically to the water far below, are absolutely spectacular. From December through April, this elevated vantage point is also a good place from which to spot migrating gray whales. The hardy ground cover of native shrubs and grasses is brightened in spring with displays of yellow and blue lupine, Indian paintbrush and other wildflowers. Note: At points the trail goes right to the very edge of clifftops that plunge straight down to the water; while the views are amazing, approach these spots at your own risk. The shale rock formations are unstable and unsafe for climbing; stay on marked trails and heed warning signs. Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
