Kitt Peak National Observatory is 20 mi. e. on SR 86, then 12 mi. s. on SR 386, within the Tohono O'odham reservation in the Quinlan Mountains. The facility conducts astronomical research and contains 27 telescopes, including the world's largest solar telescope and the Mayall 4-meter telescope. Exhibits, special programs and a nightly stargazing program are featured. Travelers are advised to check on weather and road conditions. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.
