In modern times, Canóvanas is known as La Ciudad de las Carreras (the Racetrack City) for its famous horse-racing complex, Hipódromo Camarero Race Track.

Casa Jesús T. Piñero, the home of Puerto Rico's first native governor, contains a small museum commemorating Piñero's life. He was appointed to the governor's post in 1946 by President Harry S. Truman; the island's first democratic election was held 2 years later.
