During France's attempt to retake Acadia following the British conquest, French troops made a surprise attack upon British troops in Grand Pré on Feb. 11, 1747. The incident, which claimed nearly 100 lives, helped convince the British administration that the native Acadians should be deported. Grand Pré was the principal scene of the Acadian expulsion in 1755, which was immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem “Evangeline.”
