Glacially formed Flathead Lake is the largest natural body of fresh water west of the Mississippi River; at points along its 38-mile length the lake stretches 15 miles wide. Jewel Basin, one of the country's most popular hiking areas with 35 miles of trails, is 11 miles north. A Flathead National Forest ranger station provides information about recreational opportunities in the nearby mountains.
