Xochimilco is Mexico’s famous pre-Hispanic canal system. As in ancient Tenochtitlan, it has chinampas, an ancestral method of cultivation that is unique in the world, which was inherited by the Aztec culture for the construction of its incredible city. Due to its cultural importance, the Xochimilco canals were declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1987.
