Step back in time at Madrid’s Royal Tapestry Factory (Real Fábrica de Tapices). Founded by Philip V more than 300 years ago, the factory continues to produce exquisitely crafted tapestries. Most of the designs are based on cartoons by Goya—who created them for the company in the late 18th century—while others are based on cartoons by Francisco Bayeu, Goya's brother-in-law.
The basics
The Royal Tapestry Factory offers small-group guided tours on weekdays. Tours of the space delve into the painstaking nature of the work, which is done by hand, and show guests how the techniques, still used in commissions for the royal family today, have not changed. Visitors will also see an important collection of carpets and tapestries, as well as some of the work tools used to make them, such as historical looms, spinning wheels, and winders. The factory is also home to a historic garden, which has a collection of plant species that are used to obtain dyes and textile fibers, such as cotton.

Guided tours must be booked in advance.
Tours are available in English or Spanish.
Plan to spend at least 40 minutes at the factory.
How to get there
The Royal Tapestry Factory is located in the center of Madrid, within a short walking distance of such attractions as the Prado Museum and the National Museum of Anthropology. The closest Metro stop is Menéndez Pelayo, on Line 1, which is a 5-minute walk away. Atocha, Madrid’s main train station, is less than a 10-minute walk away.
When to get there
Guided tours are offered between four and six times a day, from Monday through Friday, and must be booked ahead of time. Aim to arrive about 5 to 10 minutes before your tour starts in order to get your bearings.
The Prado Museum
Many of Goya’s original tapestry cartoons are on display at the renowned Prado Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado), which houses the most comprehensive collection of Spanish paintings in the world. The museum is a 20-minute walk from the Royal Tapestry Factory.
