Royal Palace of El Pardo (Palacio Real de El Pardo)

Calle de Manuel Alonso, Madrid, Spain, 28048

Located just north of Madrid, the Royal Palace of El Pardo is a stunning 15th century home and former hunting lodge belonging to the Spanish royal family. Visitors bask in the building's ornate interior, complete with original furniture, tapestries, and frescoes. Stroll the manicured gardens, and experience an essential piece of Spanish history.

The basics

Though the Royal Palace of El Pardo is only a short distance from Madrid, it's typically not included on Madrid sightseeing tours. Travelers have two options to see the palace, including a scenic e-bike tour, or a self-guided excursion from the city center. For independent travelers, the palace is an ideal destination for a half-day trip. For great value, take the public bus from Madrid, and join a palace tour when you arrive.

Things to know before you go

  • History fans appreciate the palace, originally built by order of King Enrique III of Castile, and later inhabited by General Franco during the Spanish Civil War.
  • Because there are limited English language tours, confirm in advance that an English guide is available.
  • Music enthusiasts should check the calendar for monthly palace concerts.
  • Design fans shouldn't miss the chandeliers, 18th-century furnishings, and lovely Spanish art collection.
  • Put away your camera—photography isn't allowed inside the palace rooms.
  • Expect to pay a small admission fee to enter the palace.

How to get there

Find the palace in Fuencarral-El Pardo, outside of Madrid's city center. Travelers that want to enjoy Madrid's weather can book an e-bike tour that stops at the palace. For a self-guided tour, you can find the palace easily on public transportation. Take the 601 bus from Madrid, straight to the palace. The ride takes about 20 minutes.

When to get there

The Royal Palace of El Pardo holds seasonal hours, and is closed for major holidays and special events. In the winter, the palace is open daily from 10am to 6pm, and over the summer, it stays open until 8pm. For free entry, visit on a Wednesday or Thursday in the winter, between 3pm and 6pm. Though the palace is busiest on weekends, expect less crowding than the more popular Royal Palace in Madrid.

Taking a Guided Tour of the Palace

Visitors to the Royal Palace of El Pardo should be sure to take a guided tour. Learn about the history of the Spanish royal family, and Spain's storied past, from the Hapsburgs to the Bourbons. Explore the collection of tapestries, visit Franco's living quarters, and learn about the numerous foreign dignitaries that have spent time in the royal residence.
