Lope de Vega House Museum (Casa Museo Lope de Vega)
Calle de Cervantes 11, Madrid, Spain, 28014
The Lope de Vega museum is the former home of one of Spain’s most celebrated writers, Félix Lope de Vega Carpio. A 16th-century playwright from Madrid, he is known as Spain’s answer to Shakespeare. The house has been carefully restored and preserved, giving a unique insight into life during the Spanish Baroque period.
The basics
The Lope de Vega House museum is one of the last remaining houses from the 16th century still standing in Madrid. To walk around it is to step back in time. See the study where Félix Lope de Vega Carpio wrote his plays and learn about his life as you wander from room to room admiring the period decorations and antique furniture and art. His garden is also carefully restored, making it a haven of peace, just as when he used to sit down in it to write.
Things to know before you go
It’s free to look around the Lope de Vega.
Booking in advance is recommended.
As the museum is a historic house, bigger groups may not be permitted to visit at the same time due to space limitations.
How to get there
The Lope de Vega House museum is near the Prado Museum in the center of Madrid, on Cervantes Street. The nearest Metro stations are Sol and Anton Martin, and it’s only a short walk from the botanical gardens and the Parque de El Retiro off the Place de la Prado.
When to get there
The museum is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Visitors are welcome to explore the house from Tuesday to Friday between the hours of 10am and 3pm. It takes around 45 minutes to see everything there is to see, so planning ahead with these short opening times is a good idea.
Exploring Madrid’s artistic heritage
Madrid has been home to some of Europe’s greatest artists, writers, and composers over the years, Félix Lope de Vega Carpio included. Spend the day in central Madrid and visit the Prado to see Velázquez’s great works of art, and see the statue of Vega’s great rival Cervantes all within walking distance. Later, soak up the inspirational atmosphere of nearby Calle de las Huertas for tapas and literary heritage.
