POINT OF INTEREST

Eglise Saint-Augustin

Sq. de l'Église, Deauville, France, 14800

Deauville’s Eglise Saint-Augustin is a mid-19th-century church on the edge of town. As it’s more modern than many French churches, it reflects an eclectic range of architectural influences, including neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque. It’s adorned with paintings, frescoes, and stained-glass windows; look out especially for a set of paintings on enameled lava on the northwest facade.

The basics

Travelers interested in French architecture will enjoy visiting this detailed church, dating from 1864. Though there’s little information on its history available at the site, you can appreciate its design and artwork. Along with admiring it from the outside, don’t miss going into the dimly lit interior to see the colorful stained-glass windows.

Deauville is on Normandy’s northern “Flower Coast,” a beach resort town. Travelers often pass through on the way to the nearby World War II-era sites, or while touring the countryside. Sidecar and horseback tours are especially popular. Most visitors go to the church independently, but if you’re taking a private guided tour, you could ask to stop here.

Things to know before you go

  • There’s no entry fee to the church.

  • It’s a good idea to dress modestly to go into the church, with clothing that covers the knees and shoulders.

  • You don’t need much time to visit, but it’s a peaceful place to sit and appreciate the setting, especially on a hot day.

How to get there

The church is located beside Deauville’s racecourse and a short walk from the beach and the town center. There’s also a local bus stop right outside. Deauville is about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Paris, which takes 2.5 hours to drive or two hours on the train.

When to get there

As a place of worship and sanctuary, the church is open to visitors most of the time, but most people would prefer to visit during the day. Catholic travelers may like to visit on Sunday to attend Mass (working knowledge of French is helpful). It’s especially lively with worshippers, and sometimes events and decorations, around Christmas, Easter, and other Christian holidays.

Other things to do in Deauville

Deauville has been a popular beach resort town since the 19th century, and there are a number of other things to see and do. Along with the church, you can visit Deauville Beach and its boardwalk, the grand Casino Barrière, the early-20th-century Villa Strassburger, Les Franciscaines art museum, and more.
