Church of San Ginés (Iglesia de San Ginés)
Calle del Arenal 13, Madrid, Spain, 28013
Dedicated to France’s Saint Genesius of Arles, the Church of San Ginés (Iglesia de San Ginés) is noteworthy as one of the oldest churches in Madrid. Although the current facade only dates back to 1870, much of the original church was built in the first half of the 17th century.
The basics
While many people opt to visit the church when a mass is in service to get the full experience, those who wish to take photos or sit in prayer or quiet contemplation are better off visiting during a quieter time. This is a particularly good idea if you're coming to see the church's most famous painting: Purification of the Temple by El Greco. The Church of San Ginés is a popular spot on all sorts of city tours. Going with a guide is a great way to learn about its history and architecture, and deepen your understanding of the significance of religion in modern-day Madrid.
Things to know before you go
The church is a must-visit for fans of Renaissance painter El Greco. As the church is a religious site, it’s considered respectful to wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees if possible. Shorts and cut-off tops should be avoided. Access to the church is up a set of stairs and may be difficult for travelers with compromised mobility to access.
How to get there
The church is located in the Sol neighborhood on Calle del Arenal, about a 3-minute walk north of Plaza Mayor and a 5-minute walk from the Royal Palace. The Callao subway station, on lines 3 and 5, is a 5-minute walk north of the church, while the Sol station, on lines 2 and 3, takes about 3 minutes to reach on foot.
When to get there
The Church of San Ginés is open mornings and evenings daily, but hours vary depending on the day of the week, so it's good to check the church's website for details. Regular masses are held throughout the year, with special services on feast days and other Catholic holidays.
The Chapel of the Holy Child of Remedy
People often visit the nearby Chapel of the Holy Child of Remedy in conjunction with the Church of San Ginés. Built where the church of the Santa Catalina de los Donados Hospital once stood, this church attracts devotees who come to pray to the Holy Child manifestation of Jesus Christ to help remedy their ills and tribulations.
