Barcelona Music Museum (Museu de la Música)
Carrer de Lepant, 150, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08013
Barcelona’s Music Museum (Museu de la Música) is known for having one of the planet's most significant collections of classical guitars. You can also expect to see pieces ranging from centuries-old harpsicords to Balinese gamelan instruments. The museum also has a room with instruments for visitors to play.
The basics
The museum houses around 2,400 musical instruments and another 400 music-related artwork, around a quarter of which is permanently displayed. Other highlights include archives preserving music ephemera from the 19th and 20th centuries and a massive library of sound recordings preserved on various media. Museum tickets are available online and in person, and some sightseeing passes allow you to enter free of charge.
Things to know before you go
While the exhibits at the Music Museum are geared toward adults, there's plenty for kids, including interactive music workshops.
The museum is on the second floor of a wheelchair-accessible building with a step-free entryway and elevators.
The museum offers a free app with Catalan, Spanish, English, and French audio guides.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the museum.
How to get there
The museum is located just east of Avinguda Meridiana, across from the National Theater of Catalonia, where there’s a hop-on, hop-off bus stop. It’s also within a short walk of four metro stations: Marina (Line 1), Glories (Line 1), Bogatell (Line 4), and Monumental (Line 2). Gaudi's iconic cathedral, La Sagrada Familial, is about a 15-minute walk away.
When to get there
Barcelona Music Museum is open Tuesday–Sunday, with extended evening hours every Thursday. It's closed on Mondays and certain major public holidays and closes early on Christmas and New Year's Eve and on Jan. 5 (the eve of Epiphany). Entry is free on Thursday evenings, the first Sunday of the month, and from late afternoon onwards every Sunday.
Palace of Catalan Music (Palau de la Música Catalana)
If you're a fan of music (or architecture), don't miss the Palace of Catalan Music. Built at the turn of the 20th century, this incredible UNESCO World Heritage-listed structure features an intricately decorated facade covered with mosaic work and sculptures, while the interior concert hall is ornamented with elaborate stained glass windows and intense sculpture work. It’s an active venue to this day, hosting events ranging from choral concerts to chamber music performances.
