About 95km from Phuket, the area around Phang-nga Bay is startlingly beautiful - sheer limestone cliffs ring the bay, while unlikely karst towers carved over the millennia into extraordinary shapes rise sheer from the azure waters. It is one of the scenic wonders of the world.
The bay can be explored aboard large boats on organised tours, or individually chartered 'long-tail' boats that are fast but noisy. Nothing beats kayaking in the region, however. The inflatable kayaks or canoes can enter semi-submerged caves inaccessible to larger boats, sometimes passing beneath overhangs so low that the canoeist has to lie flat. Absolute silence reigns within these sea caves, save for the dripping of water from a nearby stalactite or the splash of a paddle. One visitor noted that he was startled by the beating of a butterfly's wings. The caves often open into large hidden bowls, inaccessible from the top, which fill with sunlight during the day and are home to interesting flora and fauna, including flocks of swallows, the nests of which are used to make bird's-nest soup.
