Ban Chiang

( Worth Seeing )

The small upper Isaan village of Ban Chiang is the site of one of the oldest known cultures in Southeast Asia. As early as 2000 BC people living in the vicinity were firing elegantly patterned clay pots. The location, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth visiting to see the excavations, Ban Chiang Museum and examples of the early bronze objects produced by Ban Chiang culture. The present inhabitants of Ban Chiang, although not necessarily related to the original potters, have taken up the trade with enthusiasm and produce attractive and inexpensive imitations - but do not be tempted to buy the real thing as export is prohibited.
