Phitsanulok

( Worth Seeing )

Phitsanulok is an excellent base for exploring the nearby historical sites at Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai, Sawankhalok and even Kamphaeng Phet. It has some of the best accommodation and restaurants in the lower north, the latter especially along the banks of the Nam River which snakes through the town. Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat is the most important temple in Phitsanulok. Its main hall contains the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, symbol of the province and one of the most distinguished Buddha images in the kingdom. Cast in the late Sukhothai period, about six centuries ago, the golden, flame-haloed image is extremely elegant and highly venerated.
