Erawan Shrine

( Worth Seeing )

Many shrines are scattered throughout Bangkok but the most famous is dedicated to the four-headed Hindu deity Brahma (Phra Prohm in Thai). Constructed to dispel bad luck during the building of the Erawan Hotel in the 1950s, the shrine proved an immense success and believers still flock to pay their respects from all over the city. The atmosphere is rich with the fragrance of jasmine and incense, and elegant shrine dancers perform to a traditional Thai orchestra whenever someone pays them to do so. Entry is free but most visitors offer some flowers and incense; many believe that those who do so will be blessed with good luck and return to the 'City of Angels'.
