Chanthaburi

( Worth Seeing )

This busy riverside commercial hub specialising in the gem trade (both local and imported from the Pailin region in Cambodia) is home to 40,000 people. It is famous for its fine fruits, especially durian, rambutan, langsat, pineapple and mangosteen. Chanthaburi ('City of the Moon') has historical links with France and Vietnam and features shophouse architecture influenced by these nations. Many residents are of Vietnamese descent and are Catholic (the city has Thailand's largest cathedral.).
