Bang Khu Wiang Floating Market

( Highly Recommended )

Few experiences are more authentically Thai than a visit to a floating market. The best known is at Bang Khu Wiang in Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Water-borne commerce, most of which is conducted by women, starts at the crack of dawn and goes on for usually no more than two or three hours. To see Bang Khu Wiang, charter a long-tail boat from Tha Chang on Bangkok's Ratanakosin Island at about 6am.
A better, busier and more authentic floating market near Bangkok is at Damnoen Saduak.
There was a time, especially in the flat and well-watered central plains, when most commerce was water-borne. This is no longer true - canals have been filled in and built over, roads and covered markets have been constructed and scarcely a town in Thailand is without supermarkets and shopping malls. Floating markets - talaat naam in Thai - are now perceived to be a useful and lucrative tourist attraction.
