Thailand's official language is Thai, although there are considerable regional variations in the north, northeast and south. Thai is a tonal language related to Chinese, with a complex script derived from Sanskrit. It is not easy to learn and very few foreigners acquire any degree of fluency. However, English is widely spoken and Thais everywhere will welcome and sympathise with your halting attempts at speaking their language.
