PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Internal Flights
Thai Airways (THAI), Bangkok Airways and newcomer Phuket Airways link all the major towns and cities within the country, flying to more than 25 destinations. Occasionally THAI offers special domestic air passes with quite reasonable savings. These need to be purchased outside the country.

Trains
Thailand's domestic rail network, run by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), serves most major towns. Journey times are quite long due the narrowness of the gauge. Nevertheless trains are comfortable and overnight journeys include your own bed. The train remains a cheap and safe way to travel in Thailand. Bookings should be made at Bangkok's Hualamphong Station PHONE: (02) 223 3762.

Bus Travel
Thailand has a variety of government and privately run bus services. To reach certain places your only option may be the orange, non-air-conditioned government buses. These take a long time to reach their destination, stopping at every village en route. A better option is to take the faster government or privately run air-conditioned buses that rarely stop. Drinks and snacks are included in the price of the ticket.

Urban Transport
Bangkok has a new mass transit system, the Skytrain. Journeys which used to take hours now take minutes. Three routes serve most of Bangkok's important destinations. Bangkok's bus system is extensive and air-conditioned buses go just about everywhere. Bus services in other towns around the country are rudimentary; Chiang Mai no longer has a bus service. Smaller buses called songthaews serve most towns.
