Reales Alcázares
The unforgettable Reales Alcázares (Royal Palace) epitomizes the elegance and charm of Mudéjar secular architecture. Little
remains of the original Moorish Alcaza; most of the palace you see today was built by Pedro the Cruel in the 1360s, long after
the Moors left Spain. But the builders were Christianized Moors, the inventors of Mudéjar style, and this “Arabian Nights”
complex is one of the purest examples of their art remaining today. It's a labyrinth of courtyards, delicate stucco and tile
rooms, terraces and coffered chambers, fountains and arched patios. From here you pass into the 16th-century Palace of Charles
V, with its tapestries and lavish rooms. Outside are gardens with terraces, pools and shady magnolia and orange trees. Labeling
and information are poor, so your best option is to rent the English-language audio guide.
