Plaza do Obradoiro
The sweeping expanse of Plaza do Obradoiro (Obradoiro Square), in front of the cathedral, is surrounded on its other sides
by three harmonious buildings. These are the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos (Hostel of the Catholic Monarchs), the Colegio
de San Jerónimo (College of St. Jerome) and the Pazo de Raxoi, or Ayuntamiento (City Hall). The oldest building is the hostel
(now a hotel), originally founded by Ferdinand and Isabella as a pilgrims' lodging house. It has an elegantly plain facade
centered by a superb Plateresque doorway. Inside, the building is laid out around four lovely patios.
Across from the hostel is the college and its charming balcony, which dates mainly from the 17th century - although its doorway
is 200 years younger. Facing the cathedral, the 18th-century City Hall, seems to unite the whole ensemble.
