Catedral

The present Catedral (Cathedral) dates from the 11th to 13th centuries. The simple Romanesque lines of the interior provide a superb contrast to the ornate facade, added in 1750, at the cathedral's main entrance. Here stands the 12th-century triple doorway known as the Pórtico de la Glória (Doorway of Glory), one of the sculptural marvels of Spain. Prophets and Apostles surround Christ the Savior and the Four Evangelists, all carved with exceptional imagination and fluidity. Behind the worn entrance pillar and the figure of St. James is a figure said to be Maestro Mateo, the cathedral's designer. It's customary to bump your head against his in the hope some of his artistic genius may rub off.

You'll notice a pulley system high above the transept; this operates the botafumeiro, a monster incense burner used during major feasts, which requires eight men to swing it through a huge arc above the transept. The silverwork and gilded figures of the High Altar glitter under the lights of the candelabra.
