Santiago Festivals

Santiago's biggest festival is July 25, the feast of St. James, when the city is packed with pilgrims, tourists and local people. The night before sees the Apostle's Fire (Fuego del Apóstol), a spectacular fireworks display in front of the cathedral. The feast itself represents a solemn Mass, with music, choirs and Galician bagpipes. The huge incense burner, the botafumeiro, is swung in the cathedral. The feast falls in the middle of Santiago's folklore festival, a two week celebration of Galician culture, with street music, parades, concerts and markets. An international music festival is held in August and September.
