Fyns Kunstmuseum

The Fyns Kunstmuseum (Funen Art Museum) is located in an elegant, classical building and contains a superb collection. The museum has a distinctive atmosphere of serenity that is missing from some major galleries. Most of the works are by Danish artists from the 17th century to the present. Highlights include Jens Juel's vivid The Open-Mouthed One and P. S. Krøyer's Italian Field Workers, with its interesting preponderance of left-handed men - a little art puzzle. H. A. Brendekild's big painting Finished, with its prostrate worker in a vast, flat field, portrays the hard life of peasant workers in old Funen. By contrast, a real charmer is Gustava Emilie Grüner's Group Portrait of the Family Leunbach, with its cheerful, inviting faces. The museum also has some fine sculptures and a small collection of contemporary abstract art.
