Late Night Extra
Traffic jams at 2am are nothing unusual during the summer in Madrid. Thousands spend the early hours chatting and drinking
in terrazas, which spill across the pavements of the paseos, especially the Paseo de la Castellana.
Gay Madrid Madrid has the second biggest gay community in Europe, centred on the Chueca district, just north of the Gran Vía. In the small squares and narrow streets are bars, shops, discotheques and some of the best new restaurants in the city. The atmosphere is relaxed, with gays, lesbians and the straight community mixing (METRO: Chueca). What's Up? When it comes to entertainment, Madrid has several weekly guides to what is on in the city. Free, pocket-sized bi-lingual magazines such as the tourist board's En Madrid What's On and Lo Mejor de Madrid (The Best of Madrid) give the highlights for international visitors. By far the most comprehensive listings are in the 180-page Guía del Ocio (Leisure Guide), which has every event, major and minor, but this is only in Spanish. Also look out for the monthly newspaper, In Madrid, with articles and listings aimed specially at young people. Bullfighting Opinions differ on the role of bullfighting. Is it a sport, an art form or an integral part of Spain's national identity? The decision is very individual. In recent years, corridas (fights) have drawn ever-more enthusiastic crowds to the Plaza de Toros of Las Ventas, the world's most famous arena, in the east of the city. |
