The former home of publisher and collector José Lázaro Galdiano (1872-1947) contains dazzling paintings and priceless objets d'art.

The neo-Renaissance palazzo, the Parque Florido, has re-opened after a comprehensive programme of restoration and refurbishment. The exhibition begins on the ground floor with an assessment of Lázaro's intentions and achievments and offers a taster of what lies in store. Rare books and manuscripts, exquisite caskets of enameled wood, gold and silverware, rock crystal and gemstones, medieval stained glass and Renaissance bronzes all vie for attention. Look out for El Greco's magnificent Adoration of the Magi (room 2) and the 15th-century sword presented to Pope Innocent VIII by the Count of Tendilla (room 3).

Spanish paintings and scultpure are on the first floor in the former private apartments. Apart from the triptychs and panel paintings by medieval masters like Bartolome de Castro, there are canvases by El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán, José de Ribera, Velázquez and Luís Paret. Don't miss Goya's spooky Witches Sabath (Cabinete) and in the adjoining room (13) the Godoy table, fashioned from mahogany, marble and gilded bronze in 1800. The second floor is devoted to European Art from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Most of the major schools are represented and there are works by Quentin Metsys, Hieronymous Bosch, Breughel the Younger, Cranach, Dürer, Rembrandt, van Dyck and Tiepolo among the displays of Limoges enamels, Sèvres porcelain, cut glass, ivories, French table clocks and miniatures. Admirers of Constable, Gainsborough, Lawrence and Sir Joshua Reynolds are in for a treat.
