Centro Cultural Conde Duque

( Worth Seeing )

It is worth checking the entertainment listings to see what is on at this handsome cultural centre. From the outside, all you see is a long brick wall. Step through the main entrance, however, and doorways labelled Cuarto de Banderas (Flag Room) and Cuerpo de Guardia (Guard Room) are clues to the building's past. An enormous complex, it was once the barracks for the royal bodyguard, and reflected the grandeur of Felipe V's Palacio Real to the south. Begun in 1720, it housed soldiers for 150 years and, despite a fire in the 19th century, its sheer size is still impressive.
Today, the Centro is an important part of Madrid's cultural scene, holding special events and exhibitions throughout the year. Most atmospheric is the Veranos de la Villa summer festival, staged outdoors in the massive Patio Central (inner courtyard). From late June to mid-September, this vigorous international programme offers dance, music, singing, theatre and opera.
