Peace & Quiet
The contemplative life is still an integral part of Japanese culture, despite the congested nature of modern living. The population is concentrated in the cities, leaving wide, open spaces aplenty elsewhere, often preserved as national parks. These extensive areas, criss-crossed by quiet roads, can be easily accessed by car, bus and train. Parks and reserves give you the last chance of spying Japan's more unusual fauna, including the Japanese macaque, or 'snow monkey', which bathes in the hot springs of Beppu. The Japanese giant salamander and the Iriomote cat (found in the Ryuku Islands) are both unique to this country. Bears are also indigenous, with brown bears found on Hokkaido, and Asiatic brown bears on Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. |
