1 Fuji-san (Mount Fuji)

The pleasing shape and permanently snow-capped cone of Japan's highest mountain have become an enduring image of the country.

Mount Fuji is in fact a 3,776m-high dormant volcano, which last erupted in 1707. Views of the mountain have been immortalised over the years by Hokusai (1760-1849) and other artists, although modern images of the mountain usually involve a bullet train, blossom and a clear blue sky. In fact, whilst the mountain is certainly visible from the train as it passes close to the town of Fuji, you will be lucky to see its summit uncluttered by mist or cloud.

Walking to the summit of Fuji is possible at any time of year, although the inexperienced should only consider it in the fine weather of July and August. The mountain, which is an object of veneration and pilgrimage for the Japanese, can become crowded. Start from one of the four 'Fifth Stations' (served by bus from various points), of which the highest is Kawaguchiko, leaving a 5-7 hour hike to the top. Anyone of average fitness can undertake this, but bear in mind that the weather is dangerously changeable, and altitude sickness is possible even at these comparatively modest heights.

Unless you are committed to the ascent you are better advised to admire from afar and visit the lakes to the north. From Kawaguchiko, for example, there is a cable-car to the Fuji Viewing Platform and good views are possible from Lake Sai (Sai-ko). The most famous view of Fuji is from Hakone, to the south.
