Around Hakodate
Set off from the Hakodate Station and proceed west along the waterfront street. A Sunday morning market operates near the station. Pass the Old Hakodate post office on your right, and continue past the Kanemori Warehouses. A number of interesting cafés and shops have sprung up in this old corner of the town, and are well worth exploring. Bear right to head north, following the coastline. After about three quarters of a kilometre turn left, and cross the tram lines to reach the Chinese Memorial Hall. Turn left after this, heading into the Motomachi District to pass the green onion domes of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Motomachi District was an area inhabited largely by foreigners, and the Orthodox Church, built in 1862, stands out among several Western-style buildings. Continue to the Sanroku Station, and take a tram to the summit of Mount Hakodate. This is one of Japan's celebrated 'three great views', and not to be missed. It's especially dramatic at night. Return east from the tram station, crossing the tramlines. Walk back along the waterfront to Hakodate Railway Station. Distance About 4.5km Time About 2 hours plus stops Start/End point Hakodate Station Lunch There are cafés and restaurants in Kanemori, and a café on the summit of Mount Hakodate |
