Yamaguchi

( Worth Seeing )

This pleasant town acted as capital during the tumultuous period between 1467 and 1573. There are a number of interesting sights, in particular the Xavier Memorial Chapel, which commemorates the visit of the Jesuit missionary in 1550 (recently rebuilt after a fire), and the Joeiji Temple with its beautiful Zen garden. In the Kozan-koen Park is a 15th- century pagoda, picturesquely situated beside a lake.
