Fushimi Inari Taisha

( Do not miss )

Located in the southern suburbs of Kyoto, and dating back to the 8th century, this is the most important of all the many shrines dedicated to Inari, the god of rice and wealth. Popular with businessmen who come to pray for success and prosperity, the shrine's most distinctive features are the hundreds of red temple gates (torii) built over the hillside of Mount Inari, and the shrine temples with their stone foxes, the fox being Inari's earthly representative. A day can easily be spent wandering here.
