Matsue

( Highly Recommended )

A castle town straddling the Ohashi-gawa river, Matsue was immortalised in the writings of Lafcadio Hearn, who married a local girl and lived here from 1890. The castle (Matsue-jo) is original and dates from 1611. Lafcadio Hearn's Residence at the northern end of the old samurai street of Shiomi Nawate is much visited by the Japanese, who are intrigued by a foreigner's view of Japan - a museum about his life is next door. Most charming is the Meimei-an Tea House, with its delightful garden and view of the castle.
