Shinjuku

( Do not miss )

This area, in the west of the city, now probably best represents modern Tokyo - its railway station complex alone is like a small city, and the district was the inspiration for the film Bladerunner. The Shinjuku NS Building houses the largest clock in the world; and one of the buildings that make up the Metropolitan Government Offices was until recently the tallest building in the country. There are bustling underground shopping arcades, and the area west of the station is probably the best in Japan for buying cameras. Northeast of the station is Tokyo's notorious red-light district, Kabukicho, which is an amusing place to stroll around - outrageous, but perfectly safe. Shinjuku Gyoen (Shinjuku Imperial Gardens) is an 80-hectare public garden, particularly popular with local residents. The gardens include one in the formal 19th-century French style.
