Hibiya and Imperial Palace Area

( Highly Recommended )

Hibiya is largely taken up with the Imperial Palace (Kokyo), the home of the Japanese Imperial Family, which dominates the centre of Tokyo. The current building dates from 1968, replacing the original of 1888, and its forerunner, Edo Castle. The palace is open only twice a year - 2 January and 23 December - but the East Garden is open five days a week and views of the palace are possible from near the Nijubashi Bridge. The National Museum of Modern Art is worth visiting, and look out for theYasukuni Shrine, dedicated to Japan's war dead since 1853; since many of these died in imperialistic wars, the shrine has been at the centre of political controversies.
