Takayama

( Highly Recommended )

Lying among the Japan Alps, Takayama is famous for its woodcarving and colourful festivals. With a number of unspoilt, traditional streets, particularly in the Sanmachi Suji area, it is a pleasant place to stroll around for a day. Special sights include Hida Folklore Village, an open-air museum of traditional thatched farmhouses. Near the river, the Yoshijima Merchant House is distinguished by its elegant decorative detail, while carved images by a wandering 17th-century priest are the highlight of the Takayama Museum of Local History. Two festivals, on 14-15 April and 9-10 October, are well known throughout Japan for sacred music, beautiful floats and above all for puppets, manipulated with astounding skill.
Within striking distance of Takayama is the Shokawa Valley, noted for its traditonal villages.
