Nikko

( Do not miss )

Within striking distance of Tokyo and lying at the centre of over 1,400sq km of spectacular national park, Nikko should be included on any itinerary. Once a seminary for novice monks, it was chosen as the site for the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established the isolationist Edo shogunate in 1600. The mausoleum (Toshogu Shrine), consisting of several pavilions and halls, was actually begun by a grandson of Tokugawa in 1634 and is extraordinary for its venerable aspect and for the level of detail in the decoration that is so uncharacteristic of Japanese art. The famous trio of wise monkeys - 'Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil' - originated here, carved on the lintel of the Sacred Stable for White Horse.
