Asakusa

( Do not miss )

An area in the northeast of the city with a distinctive character, Asakusa is the old downtown or shitamachi quarter. It is home to the oldest and best known temple in Tokyo, the Sensoji (or Asakusa Kannon Temple), which has been standing here - in various forms - since AD 628. Nakamise-dori, in front of it, consists of several fascinating rows of gaudy shops and stalls selling snack foods, traditional gifts and souvenirs. Asakusa was the old pleasure area and geishas can still be spotted in the evenings. Boat cruises along the Sumida-gawa river begin and end at the Azuma Bridge.
