Nagoya

( Worth Seeing )

Rebuilt after World War II, Nagoya is a key industrial centre and home to two of Japan's national treasures. The Atsuta Jingu Shrine dates from the 3rd century and is one of the most important in Japan; it houses the sacred sword (not on view to visitors), handed down by the goddess Amaterasu o Mikami. Nagoya Castle (rebuilt in 1959) was originally constructed in the 17th century by one of Japan's greatest leaders, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and contains a museum of armour and family heirlooms. The two gilded bronze dolphins on the roof are to protect the castle from fire. The port area is also interesting, with a Maritime Museum and Aquarium.
