Matsumoto

( Worth Seeing )

Popular among hikers who want to explore the Japan Alps, Matsumoto is a modern city set on a high plateau against a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains. Matsumoto Castle, which has original features including a magnificent three-turreted donjon, dates back to 1595 and is one of the best-preserved in Japan. The Nihon Minzoku Shiryokan (Folklore Museum) next door is home to an impressive collection of clocks. There is also a fine museum dedicated to the art of woodblock printing (ukiyo-e).
