Inuyama

( Highly Recommended )

Located north of Nagoya, this medium-sized town has several attractions of interest. Inuyama Castle, dating from 1440, overlooks the river and is one of the few original medieval castles in Japan. Near by stands the Uraku-en Garden and within it the Jo-an Tea House, one of Japan's finest. Inuyama is also a centre for cormorant fishing. The birds 'ukai' are tethered to the boats, with a leash around the neck to prevent them swallowing the fish they catch - usually a delicacy called ayu.
